Deforestation
Forests
cover 30% of the land area on our planet. They produce vital oxygen and provide
homes for people and wildlife. Many of the world most threatened and endangered
animals live in forest, and 1.6 billion people rely on benefits forest offer,
including food, fresh water, clothing, traditional medicine and shelter.
But forest
around the world is under threat from deforestation, jeopardizing these
benefits. Deforestation comes in many forms, including fires, clear-cutting for
agriculture, ranching and development, unsustainable logging for timber, and
degradation due to climate change.
The reasons
that our forest is being removed are diverse and anthropocentric. Forest
products form the basis of number multi-billion Pound industries, which are
often rife with corruption, and more consumer products, as living space for the
ever-growing human population.
Land cover
for agriculture is believed to be the words biggest driver of deforestation,
especially in tropical area. As the human population grows, more food and
therefore more agricultural land are needed. Logging is the process by which
trees are cut down and collected to be sold for commercial gain, and supplies,
ranching, mining, unsustainable, forest fires, urbanization, degradation due to
climate change, and industrial development like mining on forest.
When an area
of forest is destroyed, the animals that are left in nearby habit are extremely vulnerable as they are more easily accessible to hunters and poacher.
The illegal wildlife trade is thought to be the fourth biggest make industry.
Putting a stop to deforestation would help to protect much of world wilier, mitigate climate change and allow people who rely on the forest for culture and subsistence to continue their way of life.
